SWIM TEAM NEWS FROM THE TIGER DEN
Swim team season is right around the corner and I would like to see the Tigers build on the spirit and performances of last season and get off to a great start to what promises to be a Summer filled with teamwork, sportsmanship, great swimming, and, most of all, FUN!!  The season will be starting off with a team get-together and ice cream social at the Rowedder’s house on Friday, May 23rd at 7:30 p.m.  I hope to see as many parents and swimmers (both returning team members and new team members) as possible.  We’ll be serving ‘make your own sundaes’ and renewing friendships with each other and with Kristin Paradise Rundell and Alex Nalesckiewicz, both of whom, I am pleased to announce, will be returning as our coaches for a fourth season!   We’ll also be taking orders for team suits, announcing plans for the upcoming season, and collecting both team dues and any suggestions you have for making our team and season more fun and more successful!

For our ‘A’ meets this year, we are in Division L and will face Forest Knolls, Montgomery Square, North Creek, Old Farm, and Quail Valley.  For our ‘B’ meets, we will continue to swim King Farm, Manor Woods, Rockville, and Tanterra, and will be swimming Strathmore Bel Pre to round out the B Meet calendar.  Also, the Montgomery County Swim League kept last year’s rule change that allows each pool to swim two relay teams in the Boys Open Medley Relay and two relay teams in the Girls Open Medley Relay at each dual meet.  We are excited that this rule change has been retained as it will continue to give swimmers in our older age groups an extra chance to swim in the ‘A’ meet each week.  With additional swims and additional swimmers, that Wheaton Woods spirit will be able to shine even more!

Swim Team dues are remaining the same this year - $70 for a family with one swimmer, $135 for a family with two swimmers, and $165 for a family with three or more swimmers.  We will also be keeping our team swim suit from last year.  If your old suit still fits, please continue to wear it, but if you do need a new suit, your first chance to place an order will be at the ice cream social.

Last year, a call went out for parents to help work automation and concessions at the swim meets and the response was tremendous.  This year, we would like to build on that volunteer spirit in these two areas and have that be a focus again.  Remember, the greater the number of parents we have trained in automation and available to work concessions, the fewer times any one parent will be needed to work at any given meet!

Another focus, as always, will be on increasing our number of certified officials.  MCSL requires each team to provide a certain number of officials in order to run each swim meet.  We currently have only two parents who are certified as a Referee, and are in desperate need of additional Starters and Stroke & Turn Judges as well, so please volunteer to attend an ‘Officials Clinic’ and become certified (or recertified) as a Stroke & Turn Judge, a Starter, or a Referee.

PLEASE help the team and each other out in these critical areas!  Thank you in advance!

If you cannot make the ice cream social at the Rowedder’s house on May 23rd, look for the swim team table at the pool during the Memorial Day Weekend.  We are always looking for new swimmers, so please encourage any of your friends who are members to join the team and those who are not yet members to join the pool and the swim team!  As we all know, summer swimming is a lot of fun, is great exercise, and is a great way to make new friends!

Afternoon swim team practice will begin on Wednesday, May 28th.  Please see the 2008 Swim Team Calendar for other important swim team dates!
